Poverty makes me sad...

Not just MY poverty, but poverty in general. How is it that people can be wealthy and live in multi-million dollar homes with servants, when they know other people can't eat, or worse, even feed their kids? How is it that the 92% of us who don't live in multi-million dollar homes with servants haven't yet lynched the remaining 8%?

The bit about health insurance is scary too. I have been accused of being far to the left of Karl Marx, but even so, when did workers, people, kids, become so fungible that we were willing to chance needing to discard them when they got sick?

  • A better tax system could shorten the bridge between the wealthy and the poor, where they charge more tax on the wealthy people. In Holland where I live, you can never be filthy rich. Our tax system is build on the idea of "the strongest shoulders have to carry the heaviest weight". On the other hand, you can never be really poor, except tramps that are junkies or alcoholics.

As for the health insurance, we actually have a law that obligates us to be insured against healthcare costs. Nonetheless, hospitals wouldn't reject people who aren't insured for whatever reason (ie refugees).

  • Yeah, that's the "slightly to the left of Karl Marx" bit. I've always advocated for a severely progressive tax system. I've also advocated for an 85% inheritance tax... you can't take it with you. This country doesn't seem to understand that you can't have perpetual growth forever. I imagine I'll be either dead or nearly so by the time the chickens come to roost, but I'm pretty sure I'm right. I also think we've subverted the natural order of things, and that those who would naturally be on top by virtue of brute strength should not be made to sacrifice everything so the charismatic and smart can develop economies of scale. That invites revolution... class warfare, etc.

Here the filthy rich run the country. Mostly because the president is always filthy rich and he appoints his friends. They run the country to make themselves and eventually their kids even more filthy and even more rich.

The comment was based on the article I cited...
